Brittany restaurant

The French tend to eat quite early in restaurants, around mid-day for lunch, and usually start their evening meal between 7 and 9 pm. French meals can be quite lengthy affairs, particularly If you have a fruits de mer (sea food platter). The French love to chat during meals and, especially if there are a lot of courses, will happily be eating for the whole afternoon, or late into the evening. However, the arrival of the menu in a restaurant is a time for silent contemplation followed by serious discussion before a choice can be made. This would account for the popularity of the apéritif in France! You will usualy be asked if you would like an apéritif, and will normally be served with nibbles.

French restaurants have to, by law, post their menus outside the entrance so that you can look at the choices and check the prices before you enter. Most restaurants, will normally offer a choice of set price menus which are usualy very good value for money, and you will know excactly what you are getting and what it will be costing. Also if you are eating from a set menu, you are not expected to tip, the tip is already included in the price. If you are choosing from an à la carte menu, then tipping is expected (10%). Wait to be shown to your table, even if the place is empty, as it is considered bad manners to walk in and get a table yourself.

A French meal normally begins with an apéritif while you order from the menu. The hors d'oeuvre are the starters, followed by les plats the main course. This will then be followed by the cheese course les fromages (which is served before the sweet in France). And then les desserts the sweet. A meal would then finish with coffee and perhaps a digestif.
